a4 men – STRATEGIC LOGISTICAL PRESENTATION


Project Concept & Narrative:


The monochrome frame forces the viewer directly into the psychological prison of behavioural modification. By extracting all color, the monotonous rhythm of the self-imposed queue becomes the central entity. The subtle acoustic weight strips away the safety of the crowd, leaving the pride of the conformist completely exposed.

"It is early Monday morning. The conformist A4 people are going to work, and are waiting neatly in line for the train that is delayed. The person in front is proud to be first in line.


Conformity is a form of social influence in which one adapts attitudes, behaviour or opinions to fit in with a group. It is about conforming to current norms, and is often driven by a desire to be accepted or a fear of standing out. Milgram's obedience experiment showed how people go to great lengths to submit to authority and group pressure, even if the actions violate their own morals. In other words, boring people who go with other boring people.


What drives these mechanical, mostly thoughtless people who don't oppose anything? A4 is a good term for people who don't dare to live by their own thoughts and ideas. Is it simply mass hypnosis that we are witnessing? Not standing out is the safest thing this type of person can do. As a critical thinking creative person, just the thought of spending your time in your own prisons is really tough to bear. What if the train is delayed for a couple of hours? Is it safer to stand with the A-4 assembly than to think for yourself?


I see more and more of these patterns of action in society. It both amazes and scares me more and more."
